The Matthews Playhouse Community Series brings engaging live performances beyond the theatre and into the community, connecting with audiences where they live and gather. These community shows transform familiar public spaces into stages “taking theatre to unexpected places.”
What is a Stage Reading?
The Community Series presents a style of theatre known as staged readings. Imaginations are engaged in a different way than with traditional theater. Actors read scripts and use vocal expressions to help the audience understand the story. There may not be costumes or props and only a suggestion of a set. This allows the audience to focus on the spoken word. Matthews Playhouse is pleased to present this more intimate, immersive style of theatre in unexpected places around the community.

Matthews Ballroom has original wood floors, tall ceilings, arched windows, exposed brick with mirrored walls, and stylish event lighting. It is located on the second floor accessed only by stairs. This historic district building has a fun mural that is one of the focal points in downtown Matthews!

EDUCATING RITA
A Comedy By Willy Russell
Frank is a tutor of English in his fifties whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to drink and bury himself in his books. Enter Rita, a forthright 26- year-old hairdresser who is eager to learn. After weeks of cajoling, Rita slowly wins over the very hesitant Frank with her innate insight and refusal to
accept no for an answer. Their relationship as teacher and student blossoms, ultimately giving Frank a new sense of self and Rita the knowledge she so craves. The play became a hit film with Michael Caine and Julie Walters.
