Community Series (2)_edited.jpg

The Matthews Playhouse Community Series brings engaging live performances beyond the theatre and into the community, connecting with audiences where they live and gather. These community shows transform familiar public spaces into stages “taking theatre to unexpected places.”

Date Night Theatre
The Gin Game
A dramatic comedy by D.L. Coburn
1978 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama

In this beautiful piece of literature, a card game is used as a metaphor for life.  Weller Martin is playing solitaire on the porch of a seedy nursing home.  Enter Fonsia Dorsey, a prim, self-righteous lady.  They discover they both dislike the home and enjoy gin rummy, so they begin to play cards and, over time, reveal intimate details of their lives.  While Weller’s pride makes him determined to win, Fonsia realizes her rigidity has led to a lonely old age.

Educating Rita
A Comedy By Willy Russell

Frank is a tutor of English in his fifties whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to drink and bury himself in his books. Enter Rita, a forthright 26-year-old hairdresser who is eager to learn. After weeks of cajoling, Rita slowly wins over the very hesitant Frank with her innate insight and refusal to accept no for an answer. Their relationship as teacher and student blossoms, ultimately giving Frank a new sense of self and Rita the knowledge she so craves. The play became a hit film with Michael Caine and Julie Walters.
