A Letter from the Director

Mary Lynn Bain.jpg

Dear Patron,

Hi! I'm Mary Lynn Bain, and I am so excited that Scrooge! is my debut as a mainstage director. The story itself has endured for so long, and it was my job to figure out why in a way that goes beyond the obvious, beyond the wonderful concept of a hardened heart thawing. It's not enough to say that there are elements of Scrooge in all of us that go unexamined year after year, and it's not enough to point fingers at those we think should take a hint.

I needed to ask more questions. Why do we tell stories? How can I make sure an audience resonates and engages with a story they know inside and out?

It's a challenging feat for actors to play beloved and well-known characters in a way that shows their humanity, and we've had long-running conversations about the difference between the emblem and human version of their characters. The emblem is the iconic idea or picture that comes to mind, and the human version pushes actors to bring genuine quirks and struggles to the stage. My job was to give them agency over their human versions so that you can see their work opposed to mine. Seeing my work would mean that you see them move exactly on this line to this spot, seeing their work is feeling in real time what they're feeling. We worked really hard on making these grounded people in real circumstances not classic characters that sleepwalk through a classic story.

Stories originated as a means of survival, a way of imagining all the ways that a human being could navigate life. We've graduated from drawings on cave walls to signal where food or danger are and have moved on to higher concepts of being. Fables teach us right from wrong, epic tales like War and Peace explore war and the psychological effects and inner lives of those who experience the changing tides. We know in theory what to do to be decent humans but as life continually proves, there is more to it than this black and white way of thinking.

It is a wonderful thing to appreciate the arc of one man who desperately needed to change. It is another thing to ask ourselves why the art never changes. Art, and this story in particular, never changes because our way of living has not changed. There are still haves and have nots and we are trending drastically to the extreme by making sure that the few have plenty while the many in need go hungry and live less than dignified lives.

This story is urging us to consider a higher concept of survival: collective well being.

My hope is that you understand the importance of looking after each other fiercely and loving while you can before you leave tonight.

Merry Christmas,

Mary Lynn
