This hands-on class is designed for high school students interested in the behind-the-scenes side of theatre. Whether you're drawn to lighting, sound, props, scenic construction, or stage management, this small-group class meets students where they are—offering personalized guidance based on individual interests and goals.

Small Group Format
Two 8-Week Semesters (Fall & Winter)

Schedule

  • Students attend class one day a week.

  • Offered Wednesdays 5:30pm-7:30pm

  • Fall Semester (8 Classes):  September 24; October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; November 5, 12

  • Winter Semester (8 Classes): January 7, 14, 21, 28; February 4, 11, 18, 25

What to Expect

  • Throughout each semester, students will explore the essential elements of technical theatre in a collaborative, supportive setting. Topics may include:

    • Stage management fundamentals

    • Scenic construction & basic tool safety

    • Lighting & sound design

    • Props, backstage etiquette, and production organization

    • Communication and paperwork for tech crews

  • Each semester features fresh content, so students can enroll in both fall and winter sessions without repeating material.

  • Students who complete this course will be eligible to assist with Matthews Playhouse School of Theatre productions in the spring, gaining valuable volunteer experience and contributing to real performances.

  • This is an ideal class for any student who wants to learn what it takes to build and run a show from behind the scenes—and eventually step into leadership roles on a student-led production team.

  • Our long-term vision is to build a fully student-led crew, with students managing lights, sound, props, and backstage operations.
