What to Expect

Discover the artistry, innovation, and teamwork that bring a production to life behind the scenes.

The Technical Theatre Production Lab is a small-group, hands-on program designed for students interested in the creative and technical elements of theatre. Whether a student is curious about stage management, props, lighting, sound, scenic design, or backstage operations, this class provides opportunities to explore a variety of disciplines while developing practical skills, leadership, and confidence.

Because enrollment is intentionally limited, students receive individualized attention and opportunities to dive deeper into the areas that interest them most. Throughout the year, students may also work alongside theatre professionals, guest artists, and experienced technicians who share their expertise and provide real-world insight into the industry.

Areas of exploration may include:

• Stage Management

• Scenic Construction & Basic Tool Safety

• Props Design & Fabrication

• Lighting & Sound Fundamentals

• Backstage Operations

Students will have opportunities to apply their learning by supporting Matthews Playhouse School of Theatre productions throughout the season. Depending on individual interests and project needs, students may assist with backstage operations, stage management, props, scenic projects, sound, lighting, and other production support areas.

Workshop sessions provide additional opportunities for hands-on learning, project work, and production preparation beyond the weekly class meetings.

Returning students are encouraged to enroll again. Each session and school year introduces new projects, production challenges, and learning opportunities, allowing students to continue building skills without repeating previous content.

Additional Production Experience Opportunities

Students enrolled in the Technical Theatre Production Lab will be invited to participate in optional production support opportunities during the Matthews Playhouse School of Theatre season.

SOT Load-In Day- Sunday, March 7

SOT Strike Day- Sunday, March 21 (Palm Sunday)

Participation in these opportunities is optional but highly encouraged for students interested in gaining real-world experience while contributing to live theatrical productions.

This class is ideal for students interested in theatre, design, technology, leadership, event production, or creative problem-solving. Participation provides meaningful experience that can support future educational opportunities, college applications, resumes, and leadership development.

Our long-term vision is to develop the next generation of theatre technicians, designers, stage managers, and production leaders while giving students meaningful opportunities to contribute to live theatrical productions.
