MPH Community Partner Spotlight: Bright Blessings in Matthews, NC

Updated: Mar 23, 2022

The Matthews Playhouse School of Theatre is hosting a special Supply Drive to support our non-profit partner, Bright Blessings, March 16th- April 3, 2022.

When it comes to serving our local community, we’ve always known that we are better together! Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts has a long history of building partnerships with community businesses and local non-profit organizations in the Matthews/Mint Hill and greater Charlotte region. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on one of these non-profit partners, Bright Blessings, a volunteer-led organization working to celebrate and enrich the lives of underserved children in our community.

John and Amy Cervantes founded the organization in 2005, when they discovered the need to celebrate birthdays and other milestones for children whose families may not have the resources to do so. Through their core programs; Bless-A-Birthday, Bless-A-Baby, Gift of Literacy and Gift of Care, Bright Blessings reached a major milestone in October of 2020 by celebrating 100,000 children. Today, Bright Blessings has partnerships with over 30 local agencies and school districts and serves children in 6 counties including Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell and York.

How You Can Help!

Matthews Playhouse School of Theatre is proud to help Bright Blessings further their mission by collecting supplies to support their Gift of Literacy program. All children served through Bright Blessing’s birthday program receive a set of new, age-appropriate books as part of their gift package. Additionally, Bright Blessings provides books to every child staying at the shelters, housing programs and domestic violence facilities they serve throughout the year. Each Blessing Bag they prepare will include new books for the child, as well as tools to promote early literacy and an opportunity to encourage positive parent-child bonding.

To help, we’re asking our School of Theatre families and others in the community who would like to donate the following:

Crayons

Flash Cards

Small Puzzles

K-5 Easy Reader Books

Small Plush Toys

Coloring Books

Workbooks

You may also order supplies from their Amazon wish list and bring their donations to the theatre during business hours, rehearsal times, and during school of theatre performances between March 16, 2022 and April 3, 2022. Collection boxes will be in the lobby of the Matthews Community Center and on the second floor. Scan QR Code below for fast access to the Amazon wish list.

We’re grateful to the School of Theatre families and friends who are stepping up to help Bright Blessings continue to deliver joy, care, and hope to even more homeless and impoverished children across our region and beyond.
